partisan FakeNews
There is an old adage in politics that states: "Be careful what you wish for." This can be applied to a multitude of things, including fake news. But, the most recent study on fake news shows that the culprits aren't always the US's most prominent bastion of truth, but rather, foreign actors. As for the best fake news outlets, the only real contenders are Britain's News of the World, France's Libération, and Russia's RIA Novosti. For the rest of us, the best bets are Australia's ABC, Ireland's Radio & Television Ireland, and Canada's CBC.
It is also notable that the best fake news outlets tend to be those that can fit into a given niche. Thus, the burgeoning market for conservative talk radio and cynical mainstream media outlets is a winner in the battle for our collective attention. In a time when the news is delivered by mobile and social media, these sites are in the driver's seat and it is their unfiltered views that are most important.
Covid-19 vaccine surge blamed on border policies
There's been an unusual spike in the number of COVID-19 cases. According to The Wall Street Journal, there have been more than 1.7 million reported cases in the U.S. this year, with at least 20,000 deaths. It's not clear how many of these deaths are linked to the disease. But it's known that the rate of cases is increasing, especially in children.
It's been speculated that unvaccinated migrants pose a risk to those in the U.S., but most doctors and health authorities dispute the claim. They argue that the rate of coronavirus is largely due to rural areas in the Midwest. As a result, migrant communities are no more prone to getting the infection than other travelers.
CCDH's "Stop Funding Fake News" campaign targeted the Federalist
The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) slapped a list of right-leaning news outlets on its website and launched a campaign to pressure Google to demonetize the Federalist, a right-wing conservative newspaper. According to NBC News, the CCDH contacted the media giant to ask it to investigate and report on the site.
CCDH is a British nonprofit advocacy organization founded by former Labour party adviser Imran Ahmed. Its board of directors includes organizers of the British Labour Party and former advisor to Gordon Brown. They have also lobbied to have neo-Nazi David Icke removed from Facebook.
A young journalist at NBC News contacted Google with a report from the think tank. The report flagged articles from the ZeroHedge blog and The Federalist.
John Oliver slams Rush Limbaugh for spreading myths about the coronavirus
On his latest episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver took a look at the coronavirus. He also slammed the right-wing media for spreading misinformation, citing the One America News Network as an example. As you might imagine, a lot of huffing and puffing occurred on both sides.
On the plus side, Fox News did take several key internal measures to minimize the impact of the disease. A good example is that they canceled in-person meetings and encouraged staff to meet in the virtual world via Skype. While this may have been a good idea, it may not have been the best thing to do.
In addition to the coronavirus, John Oliver devoted his show to other topics, including a segment on the opioid crisis, which has seen a significant spike in deaths and suicides.
